Here are the Steps to Install Tor Proxy on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver).

Install Tor Proxy on Ubuntu

  • Add Deb Package in the APT Source list
echo "deb https://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org/ $(lsb_release -cs) main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tor.list
  • Add gpg key
curl https://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org/A3C4F0F979CAA22CDBA8F512EE8CBC9E886DDD89.asc | gpg --import
gpg --export A3C4F0F979CAA22CDBA8F512EE8CBC9E886DDD89 | apt-key add -
  • Now Install Tor from its Deb package
sudo apt update
sudo apt install tor tor-geoipdb torsocks deb.torproject.org-keyring
  • Verify your Install
which tor
$ /usr/sbin/tor #output
tor --version
$ Tor version 0.3.5.8 #outuput
  • Start, Stop & Restart Tor service
sudo /etc/init.d/tor start
sudo /etc/init.d/tor restart
sudo /etc/init.d/tor stop
  • Default Tor Socks Proxy URL (Just Open it on Browser)
127.0.0.1:9050
